What is a Stripe DATEV export?

A Stripe DATEV export translates your Stripe transactions into the format tax firms import into DATEV. It consists of three parts:

Booking batch

All payments, fees, refunds and payouts as journal entries with account, contra account, amount and booking text – in DATEV format.

Receipts

Invoices, credit notes and cancellations as PDF, each linked to the corresponding booking.

Receipt list & references

Transaction IDs and a receipt list make every booking traceable back to the Stripe transaction.

Why „Stripe DATEV Export“ often goes wrong

An „export“ is not automatically ready for accounting. Stripe and DATEV follow different logics: payments ≠ payouts, fees have to be accounted for correctly, and receipts must be cleanly linked.

Manual export (typical)

  • Adjust CSV columns and map accounts manually
  • Reconcile fees and payouts by hand
  • Collect receipts separately
  • Errors lead to follow-up questions or discrepancies

Automated with finHero

  • DATEV-compliant structure instead of „raw data“
  • Fees/payouts processed consistently
  • Receipt export as PDF, automatically linked
  • Transaction IDs for fast traceability

Stripe export vs. DATEV export: the difference

A Stripe export to DATEV is more than a downloaded CSV file. This is how raw Stripe data differs from a DATEV export that is ready to import:

Exporting Stripe to DATEV manually: step by step

If you want to create the export yourself, this is the typical process. It works – but it costs time all over again every month.

The most common sources of error: fees that disappear into the net payout, missing receipts, and annual subscriptions recognized as revenue entirely in the month of payment.
  1. 1Open the report in StripeIn the Stripe Dashboard under Reports, select the period and download the itemized balance and payout reports as CSV.
  2. 2Rework the columns for DATEVBring amount, debit/credit indicator, account, contra account, receipt date, receipt field and booking text into the structure of the DATEV booking batch.
  3. 3Separate fees and refundsCreate fees, refunds and disputes as separate bookings so revenue stays gross and costs stay visible.
  4. 4Defer subscriptionsBook prepayments for annual subscriptions to deferred revenue (pRAP) and release them monthly.
  5. 5Collect receiptsDownload invoices and credit notes as PDF and match them to the bookings.
  6. 6Import and reconcileImport the booking batch into DATEV and reconcile each payout against the bank receipt.

Common questions about the Stripe DATEV export

Does Stripe offer a DATEV export itself?

No. Stripe provides reports as CSV, but no booking batch in DATEV format. Accounts, contra accounts, receipts and deferrals have to be prepared additionally – manually or with a tool like finHero.

What data does the export contain?

Payments, fees, refunds, disputes and payouts as journal entries, plus invoices, credit notes and cancellations as PDF and a receipt list with transaction IDs.

Does the export work with SKR03 and SKR04?

Yes. You choose your chart of accounts and can set up your own accounts and posting keys – ideally agreed with your tax firm.

How are Stripe fees handled?

Fees are booked separately and not netted against revenue. This keeps revenue visible at gross and lets the payout be reconciled cleanly.

What happens with annual subscriptions?

Prepayments are booked as deferred revenue (pRAP) and released monthly – including for upgrades and downgrades.

How long does setup take?

The connection to Stripe is ready in a few minutes. Aligning the account assignment with your tax firm usually takes a few business days.

Can I export retroactively?

Yes. Past months can be exported too, for example when accounting needs to be caught up.

What does finHero cost?

The price depends on your transaction volume. You can try it free for 7 days and cancel monthly.

Which Stripe reports matter for the DATEV export?

For accounting, the balance summary and the payout reconciliation matter most: they show which payments, fees and refunds make up each payout. finHero reads this data directly from your Stripe account and builds the DATEV export from it.

Does the export also work for PayPal, Mollie or Paddle?

Yes. Besides Stripe you can connect PayPal, Mollie, Adyen, Paddle and Lemon Squeezy – with read-only access and in the same DATEV format.
