Stripe and BMD: where the manual work comes from

With Stripe, only a single aggregate payout arrives in your bank account – net, after all fees have been deducted. For bookkeeping in BMD, however, your tax firm needs every individual business transaction.

Net payouts

A single payout bundles dozens of payments, fees and refunds. Without a breakdown, it can't be matched to any invoice.

Fees per transaction

Stripe charges fees per payment. If you only book them as a monthly total, you lose the link to the individual transaction.

Multiple providers

Stripe for cards, Mollie for other payment methods, Paddle for software – each provider delivers different reports and columns.

Missing receipts

Invoices and credit notes sit in the provider dashboard. The tax firm has to request and match them one by one.

How Stripe data becomes a BMD booking batch

finHero books every transaction individually and referenceably via a clearing account for the payment provider. The example on the right shows two invoices that are paid via Stripe and paid out together.

  1. 1Invoice to customerThe outgoing invoice is booked against revenue – to an individual or a collective customer account, exactly as your tax firm specifies.
  2. 2Payment to the clearing accountThe incoming payment clears the customer account and lands in the provider's clearing account, including the transaction ID.
  3. 3Fee as a separate bookingEach Stripe fee is booked separately to bank charges (Spesen des Geldverkehrs): 120,00 + 360,00 − 2,05 − 5,29 = 472,66.
  4. 4Payout clears the accountThe payout of 472,66 to the bank brings the clearing account to zero. If a balance remains, you can see immediately where something is missing.

Account numbers and amounts are sample values. Which accounts from the Austrian standard chart of accounts (Einheitskontenrahmen, EKR) and which tax codes you use is something you decide with your tax firm.

Which Stripe transactions end up in the BMD export

Not just payments: every transaction that changes the balance at the payment provider is exported as a separate, traceable booking.

What finHero's BMD export contains

The export is structured so that your tax firm sets it up once and then imports it the same way every month.

Five payment providers, one export

Stripe, Mollie, Adyen, Paddle and Lemon Squeezy – all revenue, fees and payouts land in the same BMD booking import.

Import-ready for BMD NTCS

Semicolon CSV with clear columns, amounts with a decimal comma, dates as DD.MM.YYYY – the firm maps the columns once and then imports monthly with a single click.

Traceable down to the transaction

Every booking record carries the payment provider's original transaction ID. Queries from your firm are resolved in seconds.

Your own chart of accounts (EKR)

Freely configurable accounts – set up the matching accounts from the Austrian standard chart of accounts together with your firm.

Catch up on past periods

Create exports for any months retroactively and quickly bring your accounting up to date.

Receipts included

Invoice PDFs are supplied – including a receipt list that assigns each file to its receipt number.

Merchant of Record booked correctly

Paddle and Lemon Squeezy revenue is booked as reverse-charge income against the provider as debtor – exactly as the MoR model requires.

Receipts & receipt list included

Invoice PDFs are supplied, the receipt list assigns each file to its receipt number – ideal for the BMD document archive.

Stripe accounting in Austria: what to clarify with your tax firm in advance

BMD NTCS is the accounting system at many Austrian tax advisory firms. finHero delivers the data in the right import format – the tax assessment remains with your tax firm. You should decide on these points together before the first export.

Tax rates and tax codes are deliberately mentioned here only in general terms. What your tax advisory firm decides for your company is binding.

Checklist for the alignment meeting

  • Which EKR accounts are used for revenue, the clearing account, bank and bank charges
  • Which tax codes apply to the revenue – for example at the standard rate of 20 % or for foreign revenue
  • Whether customers are booked as individual customer accounts or via a collective customer account
  • How the fees are treated – Stripe Payments Europe is based in Ireland
  • How Paddle and Lemon Squeezy revenue (merchant of record) is recorded
  • How often exports are run – monthly is common – and from which period retroactively

Stripe, Mollie & Paddle in BMD: differences by provider
