Connect Stripe with finHeroStep by step to your first DATEV export
Here's how to connect your Stripe account to finHero in a few minutes: install the app from the Stripe App Marketplace, confirm read-only access, define accounts and generate your first test export – without code and without copying API keys around.
Preparation
What you need before connecting Stripe with finHero
The actual connection only takes a few minutes. With these points in mind, your first export will also go through without follow-up questions.
- A Stripe account in which you are allowed to install apps (usually the administrator or owner role)
- A finHero account – the first 7 days are free, and you can cancel monthly
- The information whether your tax firm books with SKR03 or SKR04, and which accounts it wants
- Optional: the DATEV advisor number and client number for the export
You'll find the finHero app in the official Stripe App Marketplace. From there, you install it directly into your Stripe account in a few clicks.

- 2Select account and review permissionsChoose the Stripe account you want to connect. Before installation, Stripe shows you exactly which data the app may read – no write permissions are requested.
- 3Confirm installationOnce you confirm, the app is installed. No API key needs to be copied manually for Stripe – the connection runs via the Stripe app.
- 4Sign in to finHeroSign in to finHero or create an account. Your Stripe account will then appear as a connected data source.
- 5Define chart of accounts and accountsChoose SKR03 or SKR04 or enter your own accounts. Specify whether to book with individual debtors or a collective debtor account, and add rules if needed.
- 6Generate your first test exportChoose a closed month and generate the export: DATEV booking batch (CSV) plus receipts as PDFs and a receipt list. Give this test export to your tax firm for review.
Permissions
Which Stripe permissions finHero requests
The finHero app works in read-only mode. Stripe shows you exactly which permissions are requested before installation.
Read payments
Payments, fees, refunds and disputes are read in order to generate individual bookings from them.
Read invoices and credit notes
Invoices, credit notes and cancellations are imported as PDF receipts and linked to the booking via the transaction ID.
Read payouts
Payouts are read in order to reconcile the cash-in-transit account (Geldtransitkonto) against the bank credit.
No write access
finHero cannot change anything in Stripe: it can't trigger payments, create customers or change settings.
After connecting
What happens after connecting Stripe
finHero reads in the Stripe data and prepares it as a DATEV booking batch. Every payment, every fee and every payout becomes its own referenceable booking. The example shows a simplified test export in SKR03 (agree the accounts with your tax firm).
- Payments, fees, refunds and payouts as separate bookings
- Payouts balance the cash-in-transit account (SKR03 1360 / SKR04 1460)
- Every export is reconciled against the Stripe balance report
- Retroactive exports for past months are possible
Exactly what's in the export is explained in our article on the Stripe DATEV Export. How your tax firm then processes the file is described under Stripe in DATEV importieren.
| Amount € | Account | Contra account | Booking text |
|---|---|---|---|
| 119,00 | 1360 | 8400 | Payment ch_3Px… invoice 2026-0142 |
| 1,92 | 4970 | 1360 | Stripe fee ch_3Px… |
| 117,08 | 1200 | 1360 | Payout po_1Qa… to bank |
First test export
Checking your first export: checklist
Before you start exporting regularly each month, a quick check with your tax firm is worthwhile. In our experience, agreeing on the accounts takes a few business days.
- The total of payouts in the export matches the bank credits for the month
- Fees land on the agreed account (e.g. incidental costs of monetary transactions, SKR03 4970 / SKR04 6855)
- Revenue accounts and posting keys match the tax rates of your sales
- Receipts (PDF) can be matched to the correct booking via the transaction ID
- Your tax firm can import the booking batch into DATEV without error messages
More accounts
Connecting multiple Stripe accounts and other payment providers
Many companies use more than one Stripe account or other payment providers as well. Everything ends up in the same DATEV export process.
Multiple Stripe accounts
Install the finHero app in every Stripe account you want to connect – for example for different brands or countries.
Multiple clients
If the Stripe accounts belong to different companies, assign them to separate clients – each with their own accounts and exports.
PayPal, Mollie, Adyen
You connect these providers with an API key that only has read permissions. How to create it is described in the respective provider's developer area.
Paddle and Lemon Squeezy
Here, too, a read-only API key is all you need. Create a dedicated key for finHero so you can revoke it separately at any time.
Troubleshooting
If connecting Stripe doesn't work
Most problems have simple causes. This table helps you narrow them down.
| Problem | Possible cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| “Install” is not possible | Your Stripe role lacks permissions to install apps | Ask the owner or administrator of the Stripe account to install the app |
| Export is empty | Selected period has no data or only test mode data | Select live mode and a month with sales |
| Totals don't match | Accounts or period don't match the bank | Compare payouts with the Stripe balance report and contact us |
| API key is rejected (other providers) | Key expired, revoked or without read permissions | Create a new read-only key and enter it again |
Security
Security when connecting Stripe
- Read-only access: finHero cannot trigger payments or change data in Stripe
- You can end the connection at any time by uninstalling the app in Stripe
- For other providers, use dedicated read-only keys and never share your main secret key
- Every export package receives a stored SHA-256 checksum for traceability
FAQ
Frequently asked questions: connecting Stripe with finHero
Do I need a Stripe API key to connect finHero?

How long does connecting take?
The connection itself only takes a few minutes. Agreeing on the accounts with your tax firm usually takes a few business days.
Can finHero change anything in my Stripe account?
No. The app requests read permissions only, for example for payments, invoices and payouts. No write access is requested.
Can I connect multiple Stripe accounts?
Yes. You install the app in each Stripe account and can assign the accounts to different clients if needed.
Which chart of accounts should I choose?
The one your tax firm books with – usually SKR03 or SKR04. You can also enter your own accounts. You should agree on the specific account assignment with your tax firm.
